India’s textile section is one of the oldest production units dating back several centuries. For so many years this textile industry has been providing ample amount of employment opportunities to the people. India’s dominant occupational sector for its inhabitants was the primary sector [agricultural sector] before independence. The approach of economic reforms gave a boost to the industrial sector followed by the service sector from the year 1999. Slowly and gradually, the contribution of the industrial sector escalated worldwide and in the year 2010, the data showed 11.04% of share in total exports. Such victory has not directly resulted in global markets; instead, it started from the country itself. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT OF INDIA: In the year 2016-17, the GDP contribution of the industrial sector was 29.02%, the service sector was 53.66% and the rest was of the agricultural sector respectively. Likewise, the recent data indicates the contribution of the service sector around 54.3% [current prices] followed by the industrial sector consisting of 29.6% [current prices] and agricultural sector around 17% [current prices] of share in Indian GDP. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT OF INDIAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY: If we have a look at the past 10 years, the share of the textile industry had been declined constantly. The highest share of the production sector in GDP is seen in the year 2008 with 31.7% which decreased to 30.16% in 2011. The series of GDP then lessened constantly till 2015 at 27.35% followed by 26.5% in 2017 respectively. There was then a slight increase of 0.93% in 2018 with a GDP of 26.75%. COTTON MARKET IN INDIA: India’s textile fabrication is predominantly cotton based. Apparently, cotton is very indispensable in the textile market. The most significant part of the textile market is that it provides employment to a high section of the population i.e. 51 million people directly and 68% of people indirectly. The vital cotton producers in India are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan and so on. In the year 2018-19, the cotton production in India was US$28.7 million followed by textile and clothing export which stood at US$36.62 billion respectively. Additionally, the export of cotton yarn, cotton fabrics, and cotton made-ups was US$3.9 billion and US$5.95 billion respectively. HOME TEXTILES IN INDIA: India is globally spotted and highly appreciated for its wide variety and elegant designs in home textiles and furnishing fabrics. It reports 7% of global home textile trades. The country is on the outline of an increase in affording housing sector entities as there is fine growth in employment opportunities offered by both industrial as well as the service sector. This has definitely resulted in the demand for home textiles at 30-40% per annum. With spreading awareness of the environment, safety and hygiene the demand for upgraded quality home textiles with improved features are increasing. Especially, the youngsters focusing on a better standard of living by their high incomes surely want the standard quality of home textiles. It is now becoming a lucrative business. The widened fashion section has hit not only apparel but also the home market. To approach the increasing demand many retailers are also entering into this field. However, the advent of E-commerce has increased the competition with numerous websites leading to growth. Globally India had 55% of home textile trade with the United States and 25% with the European Union. TEXTILE MILLS: Textile mills are the units producing woven textile fabrics and many more related products. Textile mills are named as one of the largest employment producing segment providing employment to 10 lakh workers. Textile products produced in textile mills are cotton yarn, blended yarn, synthetic yarn, acrylic blankets, knitted fabrics, etc. The total number of cotton textile mills was 1788 segmented as 92- public units, 152- cooperative units, and 1444- private units. Among all the activities, spinning captured half of the total mills in the year 1992-1999.
